Diseases that cause neoplasia in poultry include Marek's disease, caused by herpesviruses, avian leukosis and reticuloendotheliosis, caused by retroviruses, and diseases of unknown etiology. These diseases are responsible for both mortality and economic losses due to depressed performance. Marek's disease virus (MHV) and avian leukosis viruses (ALV) are widespread worldwide, and new strains emerging in certain locations can spread across borders and undermine national disease control measures. Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) is also present in many countries. Marek's disease virus is transmitted horizontally, and international spread can be prevented with appropriate hygiene measures. ALV and REV are transmitted both horizontally and vertically (via egg transmission), and measures to prevent international spread are more difficult. Marek's disease is controlled by vaccination, while vaccination against ALV and REV is not. There is no strong evidence that these neoplastic diseases pose a public health threat. The purpose of this review is to provide information about neoplastic diseases seen in poultry.
