Seasonal Variations in Physicochemical Parameters of The Karnaphuli River, Chattogram, Bangladesh: Impact on Water Quality

Abstract

The Karnaphuli River in Chattogram, Bangladesh, plays a crucial role in the national economy, supporting both maritime shipping and fish production. The present study examined the monthly variation and the degree of correlation in the physicochemical conditions of the Karnaphuli River. The physical condition of the water was more variable during the summer and monsoon months, as indicated by low to moderate transparency (12-40 cm), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) (0.02-5.55 ppt), and water temperature (21-31.5 °C). Most of the chemical parameters, including Conductivity (107 - 2155 μS/cm), pH (7.4 - 8.2), Dissolved oxygen (DO) (1.63 - 7.30 mg/L), Calcium (Ca2+) (5.61 - 49.60 mg/L), Total Hardness (46 - 950 mg/L), Alkalinity (41 - 73 mg/L), Chloride (3 - 59.2 mg/L) were high in winter months and Salinity was nearly zero except in winter (1 - 3 ppt). Significant correlations were observed among several parameters, indicating the influence of interconnected environmental processes. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of the river's water quality, influenced by both natural cycles and human activities. Understanding these variations is essential for managing the river's ecosystem and sustaining its economic contributions, particularly in fisheries and port operations.
